I have already written a few books in the self-help field and a little while ago I decided to write a book about obsessive compulsive disorder - OCD. Initially, I couldn't think of the best way to approach it, so I just started writing. After a while, I realised that what was coming together was an autobiography. An unadulterated autobiography of my experience of OCD. As I continued to write I asked myself "Should I be doing this? I'm a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, a highly trained and responsible person. A person who runs a service. Will I lose credibility by 'coming out' about my OCD and sharing my most painful and intimate problems with others? Isn't it a bit of a professional risk?"Well, I guess you'll need decide that for yourself when you read this book. The most poignant feedback I have received so far has been from my partner Nicola who looked over the book and said "Wow...I didn't realise ... just... how disturbed you were!"But, as you notice, this book has been published and is available for you to read, so I didn't take what Nicola said in a negative way. As a psychologist I have a very different view on emotional dysfunction to most people. Our weirdest and most frightening thoughts retain their power when we keep them hidden, and shame is a very powerful silencer! How can I possibly expect other people that I work with to be open and frank about their problems if I'm not transparent about mine.
This is my unadulterated story of OCD; how I learnt to understand it; live with it; and ultimately get it to work for me.
